in Cyprus Today – 27/10/2009

Just returned last night after a week’s holiday in Antalya so missed two reviews of  “in Cyprus Today”.

Mass shutdown in general strike – government and municipality offices, routine hospital services, ports and banks are due to close as 28 unions protest against an alleged 30-35% cut in public servant wages in order to align them with Turkey. Starting wages would then allegedly be 13TL above the minimum wage, e.g. labourers would earn 1250TL instead of 2206TL pm.

Hailstones size of – hen’s eggs or walnuts and they cracked solar panels and water tanks in the Kalkalı, Alsancak, Lapta and Karşiyaka areas.

Swine flu school scrub down – although it has still not been confirmed that the pupil actually did have swine flu. This was because he was treated at a private clinic in the south which refused to hand over medical records.

Protect and serve – people are being asked their views on how the landscape can be protected, using EU money of course. Editor - the public will be consulted then ignored.

Project will promote greater energy efficency – more meetings using EU money

Man in court over murder – is now in the UK thanks to north Cyprus allowing him to be extradited

Petrol prices increas after rise in cost of oil – £80 a barrel oil means that 10Kr/litre has been added to pump prices

Suspicions rise over new aid committee – some feel that foreign aid may not be allocated to opponents of the government now that bids are no longer direct to the foreign funders

Turks give the South counter-proposal for direct talks – plans are being prepared for a Cyprus Problem “four-way dialogue” including Turkey and Greece.

‘Technology Island’ hope for TRNC - “north Cyprus is poised to become a world leader.” Editor - I think we would be happy if they could just catch up with the rest of the developed world, for example 16Mbit link for £16pm?
