The Real Cyprus Problem – Sibel Hodge
When does an unrecognized country become an international household name? When there’s a political witch hunt being played out in the European and UK courts.
Many people have read the press reports over the last week about the Apostolides V Orams court case, so I’m not going to talk about the background to the case. After all, the whole world already knows the historical facts surrounding the Cyprus issue, right?
Wrong!
So I’m going to take this opportunity to remind the world about the well documented historical facts that they conveniently forget.
Since 1963 the Turkish Cypriots have been victims: Victims of genocide (or ethnic cleansing, if you prefer) at the hands of Greek Cypriots. Anyone only has to read the Greek Cypriots’ Akritas Plan to see this. Turkish Cypriots have been victims of the UN for failing to punish this genocide. They’ve been victims of the UK for failing to honour its Treaty of Guarantee and let the genocide carry on. They’ve been victims of terrorist organization, Eoka. They’ve been victims of the Greek Cypriot obsession with Enosis. They’ve been victims of the EU for allowing a divided island to become a member state – basically allowing this court decision to be made – and for the EU failing to keep its promises to strip away the embargoes imposed on North Cyprus. They have been, and still are being, discriminated against.
Greek Cypriots illegally ejected Turkish Cypriots from the government in 1963, thereby forcibly ending the contractual bi-national constitution of the Republic of Cyprus. And On 21/12/63 the genocide against Turkish Cypriots began. They were forced to flee their homes (many in South Cyprus) as refugees and were eventually living in small enclaves with their basic human and constitutional rights denied while the world sat back and watched. This genocide carried on for eleven years until Turkey was the only country with the balls to intervene.
Now it’s time for a reality check. What were Turkish Cypriot refugees supposed to do for the last thirty-six years? Were they supposed to just wait to die in refugee camps without basic food, water, and medical supplies? Were they supposed to live in poverty with no roof over their heads? Or were they supposed to rebuild their homes, their infrastructure, their economy, and their lives? It’s called survival. And until the rest of the world finally admits the real cause and effect of the “Cyprus Problem” how can any decision, recommendation, or pressure that they make be anything other than uninformed bias?
OK, so the Greek Cypriot President, Demetrious Christofias, wasn’t a direct party to the Apostolides V Orams case. But it insults our intelligence to say that it didn’t receive his full backing. And while these kinds of piecemeal court cases are being played out in the international media, how can the Cyprus negotiations between the two leaders carry on? These property issues cannot be dealt with on a one to one basis. They must be part of a comprehensive political solution. How can the North and South reach a political agreement when one side is using the courts to shoot a missile through the talks? By continuing with this kind of action the Greek Cypriots are condemning any chance of an amicable settlement. How can a bizonal, bicommunal solution be possible under these circumstances? Basically, I think it dooms the talks to failure now and partition will become inevitable.
We can’t go back to the 1960s, and who would want to? Since the intervention of the Turkish Army’s aptly named “Peace Operation” in 1974, that’s exactly what there has been on the island: Peace. No one has been killed in the name of war since then, and that’s how I want it to stay.
Similarly, we can’t change the past. We have to turn a negative into a positive and look to the future. Now would be a brilliant opportunity for the Turkish Cypriots to get their mouths into gear and shout about the real reasons for the “Cyprus Problem.” Desperate times call for desperate measures, and this court case will also have an impact on Turkish Cypriots who have assets in other EU countries.
So, what will happen now? Will the borders be closed? Will North Cyprus be annexed to Turkey? What about the land in the South belonging to Turkish Cypriots that has been occupied, sold, and misappropriated by Greek Cypriots? With the problems of many EU countries, will there even be an EU in ten years time? Your guess is as good as mine. Everyone I’ve spoken to about the Orams case is not in panic mode, and today’s news is tomorrow’s chip wrapper.
Every country has its own political agenda that shape our lives and the average person will never be aware of the true issues behind their decisions. What I do know is that it’s rarely about what’s right and wrong.

Sibel:
Good piece.
Just remember the following:
1. The Orams case will eventually just be a footnote in the history of the island.
2. The TCs need to use this ‘reality’ check as a basis for finding not just their voice for their cause but also for a new direction. For too long the TCs have been in the ‘yolk’ of everything Western. The irony is that in 2004, when the GC threw a spanner in to the works of the Annan Plan – and the EU still allowed the GC to join – it should have been clear then that the TCs were neither ‘White enough’ nor ‘Christian enough’ to be a part of the EU – and were “bought off” with a Euro 259 Million ‘one off payment. This point is further illustrated by the manner in which Turkey’s membership is being handled by the EU and in particular the statements made by the French and German governments.
3. For too long the the TCs defined the Cyprus problem in terms of ‘peace, security and reconciliation’ whereas the GCs were always planning to undermine the fragile TRNC economy as they had done for the previous 30 years prior to 2004. It was only the failure of the TRNC leadership to see through this perversion of the ‘political process’ that has brought the TRNC to this juncture.
4. The GCs agenda has not chnaged in 60 years or more – it is the total domination of the island politically, economically and culturally. Their preferred option is to have a TC free Cyprus. Their hope is that by crippling the TRNC economy those TCs who will have had enough will emigrate to either other parts of the EU or to Turkey – leaving this beautiful island to them. This has been and continues to be their strategy.
5. The time has come for TCs to take a good look around them and decide whether they ‘want to join a club in which they will always be 2nd class citizens’? A political solution should not exclude a TRNC north – independent of and free from not only Greek domination but also EU domination. There are many more new opportunities for a free and independent TRNC looking East and to its roots than looking West and forever in servitude to the hypocritical values espoused by the various organs of the EU including but not limited to the ECJ and EU Parliament. I recall in 2004, the EU Commissioner saying it will reward the TCs for voting yes in the referendum – and if the GCs vote against the EU will lift the international sanctions aganst the TRNC. What has in fact happaned? Exactly the opposite.
6. If there ever was a time for the TCs to define their own destiny – it is now. This half-way house of being inside but yet outside the EU is both offensive and tiresome. It’s like being slightly pregnant – inconceivable yet real! The TCs have all of the burdens of the oppressive laws which the ROC can invoke and yet no access to any meaningful representation to defend itself. In short, it has the worst of all worlds.
7. There is a new world order emerging. North Africa, Middle East, Far East and Russia offer not only new horizons but also new opportunities for the most beautiful part of the Jewel of the Med.
8. It is time to negotiate from strength and not weakness. Time for TCs to recognise their roots are Eastern and no matter how many Western Cultures they adopt they will always be ‘outsiders’.
If the current talks fail and it seems likely they will fail, then the next step for the TRNC should be to move forward to greater international recognition and slowly but surely establish their own realities. As for the alleged GCs claim to land and property – a compensation fund should be established and over time net of TCs assests in the South ‘pay off’ what maybe owed.
9. There is no point in renewing nuptials when the divorce was acrimonious as could be and where one spouse demands are not only unreasonable but include punishment in peroetuity for crimes of their forefathers! A VELVET DIVORCE is in my view the best way forward. It has happened before Checkoslovakia, Kosovo. Recognition will come – the 56 countries of the Organisation of Islamic Countries has already indicated that they would move towards this if the TRNC was boxed in by the EU. Even the USA has indicated it will not support further sanctions against the TRNC.
10. The GCs have never acted in good faith. The EU has followed suit. How many more knocks must the TRNC take before its people wake up to the realities that its destiny lies in the East and NOT the West!

Genocide? Why do you use “big words” when you don’t even know what they mean?
Here’s what a REAL genocide is all about…

After having been ruled by different Westeuropean powers (Lusignans, Venetians) for four hundred years, Cyprus was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in 1570. The Ottomans were wel¬comed by many Cypriots because they liberated them from the Westeuropean feudal system and reinstalled the rights of the Orthodox church to a very large ex¬tent. Mmmm, thanks for being polite Sibel as you can see there are not so many gentlemen south of the crossing. Perhaps when they get someone to read out to them what you have written they might actually respond to your article intelligently. I think they must be so well behaved in this “other decent forum” that they reserve their disgusting behaviour for here. Hopefully those reading the comments they have left will be able to judge from them the kind of people they are behind their pretence of wanting a united Cyprus where all people are treated with respect.

Say what you want – after 35 years the best you can do is to be vile on forums – and bask in the the Oramses “victory”! A victory which is unenforceable
So not much has really changed has it? You still don’t have you alleged land – and outside of a political solution – the status qiu will remain!
My! I am shaking in my boots at your implied threats! As I have said before I do not have any TRNC property but I am tempted to go and hunt down some bargains
Maybe you have some alleged land in the TRNC? If it’s of good quaility and cheap I’d be interestd, lol
I offered the same to Yawnnniiisss, but he seems somewhat reluctant to let me know where his alleged land is in the TRNC! Perhaps, like much else he has had to say – it is just an illusion of his sad old mind?
Sibel is a smart, intelligent woman – perhaps given what you have in the ROC and the Greek preferences
it’s hard for you to appreciate good women, period!
Still, tell me with all the legal judgements over the last 35 years – exactly what have you acieved – Sweet FA

Looner , let me tell you what we have achieved in the last 35 years.
Having lost 40 % of our island to Turkey , and having to deal with more than 160 thousand refugees , having the infrastructure of our nation destroyed , we came back almost immediately to create one of the most prosperous nations in Europe . The Cyprus pound came under tremendous pressure way back in the early days of occupation , but contrary to expectations it surpassed them all , not only did the CY £ remained a healthy and a steady currency it outperformed Stg , to the annoyance of the UK Cypriots , continually .
Our economy flourished , our health and social services equal if not better than those of the UK , our pensioners benefit by a generous allowance much higher than that of the UK ,a retired couple in Cyprus receive more than 1000 EUROS A MONTH !!
Our health service which also provides , as it should do , care to our T/C compatriots not just the couple of thousand who reside in the free parts but to all Cypriot ID and passport holders , some 60 thousand TCs qualify for free treatment.
We have in Cyprus one of the highest standards of living in Europe with modern and efficient roads , telecommunications , hospitals , schools and social amenities , and you Mr Plonker ask what have we achieved !!!!
Let me once again reiterate . You know as much about the political intricacies surrounding Cyprus as you do about the law governing citizens rights to their properties over which they possess a legal document recognized internationally by all judicial processes , yet you still maintain the erroneous and laughable position that my property over which a legal deed is in force as issued by the British Administration of the 50s , is merely ” alleged ” !!!
In short Plonker you are an empty book , just blank pages that someone scribbled a load of rubbish which you persistently regurgitate , the same as you perpetually do with my name !!

WHAT BRAIN BOX OF ROC HAVE YOU ACHIEVED WITH RESPECT TO GETTING YOUR ALLEGED LAND AND PROPERTY BACK – BY YOUR LEGAL ACTION, INTRANSIGENCE AND DUPLICIOUS NEGOTIATIONS?
Answer: A BIG FAT NOTHING!
Try a bit harder to concentrate on the question and the context – otherwise take a break be kind to yourself – relax and imagine what has happened to your alleged land whilst you have a nice cup of cocoa and wait for the nurse to come and change your nappy
As for your point – if all that progress you claim produces nutters like you – lucky for you the ROC has good health services -looks like the mental hospital will be very, very busy indeed
