Cyprus potato crops destroyed
About 70% of potato crops in the Famagusta district suffered extensive irrversible damage because of the recent frost. The damage had been caused by three nights of freezing temperatures. The crops had been planted 3 months ago and had been due for export to Britain and other countries. Cyprus new potatoes are a very popular product bought in UK supermarkets in late spring.
It is not known if this damage has spread to other areas as this is one of the first reports of the frost damage. Farmers are asking the Farmers’ Association to visit the potato plantations in order to evaluate the damage so that compensation can be paid at a time when they would normally expect payment for the crops.

Is this Cyprus wide, or a report from the South?

Troodo, the only confirmed problem is in the south around Mağusa but crops should have been hit all over the island wherever there are frost pockets. It’s the destruction of leaves and stems which causes the problem with these early potatoes.

Hi Malcolm and Trodoo
As you say Malcolm, the weather recognises no borders.
I was living in the South when this happened before and the
whole seasons crop was lost. They imported from Egypt and the
potatoes were expensive and flavourless. Lets hope not all
the crop is lost.

BK,
How would you describe the boundry line between the RoC and the SBAs?
As these SBAs are not part of the RoC and there are customs and police/immigration controls, surely these must be borders?
