EU to award TRNC agricultural support grants on 24th February
An award ceremony will take place at the Lefke Gardens Hotel in Lefke on Thursday 24 February at 18:45 in order to officially award further grants to 188 Turkish Cypriot farmers and rural enterprises. The purpose of these EU awards is to help bring farming in the north in line with EU standards and best practices.
This is the second initiative of the type. The first, launched in December 2008, provided financial support for equipment purchases for dairy, crop and horticultural production. In that case, 141 grants ranging from €15,000 to €100,000 were awarded, up to 65% of the costs; a total value of almost €5,000,000.
This second scheme was launched in June 2009 with aims to introduce new technologies to improve production quality along with environmental and occupational safety and hygiene. 47 grants have been awarded, ranging from €10,000 to €150,000, in an attempt to modernise and upgrade post-harvest technologies for cereals, fruit, vegetable and potato and dairy processing. Another focus of these grants was to try to develop alternative rural incomes through rural tourism, rural micro-enterprises and small-scale fisheries and aquaculture.
The project is funded under the €259 million EU funded Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community which is managed by the European Commission.

Greeks will be fuming, I wonder if EU had to seek permission from Greek Cyprus to enter TRNC.

i’m actually quite surprised myself, i thought the eu didn’t recognise the north at all let alone giving them money for such projects, is this a wee sign the eu are waning, with regards to the north, no doubt the people in the south will take to the streets to demonstrate their anger, does that mean these EU officials coming in to the north will be regarded as illegals, or do they have diplomatic immunity

I’d like to see the EU definition of “Micro tourism”. Not allowing direct flights and then funding tourism projects?

BK and YS i really love you peasants in the south, you can’t see past the end of your nose, you both love to quote the eu, when are you going to realise the eu don’t give a shit about your problem, what’s this about an umbrella BK, are you expecting heavy rain in the north. if you want the north to learn anything about farming and animal welfare, the south is the last place on earth you want to take advice from, their treatment of animals is appauling, britain has one of the strictest rules when it comes to farming. you people change your minds like the weather, one minute you hate people going to the north via the south, now your saying they’re free to do what they want, come on you parasites make your mind up what you want

You make some good points and if I am not mistaken, you do not live in the TRNC, do I detect Scottish origins? Robert.
Yiannis – stop burping its very rude.
BK you obviously suffer from low self esteem – I have always found
people with inferiority complexes know themselves very well.

Kyri,
Your language in message 4565 is simply another example of the major problem with GCs. You are unable to compete in rational debate, so when mindless repetition gets boring, you must resort to foul language to try to prove a point.
But the only point you continue to prove is that you are unable to manage reasoned and rational argument without a constant stream of insults and abuse, punctuated by obscene language.
Why don’t you transfer over to that other forum? At least there they will all agree with you and applaud the cleverness of your obscenities, such is the sum total of their intellect.

BK, you have been placed in a moderation queue because of the use of obscene language. If you don’t think your language was obscene go and talk like that to your children or parents or a policeman and find out their response.

It’s not what you said, it’s the obscenity I was objecting to.

Obscenity is one thing, but many of the forgoing comments from the One Trick Ponies are just pure racist. They claim to want land in the North but wouldn’t go there even if they could. I am not sure if they just hate Brits, the English, the Turks or people who wash daily in general. But who cares anyway, they are welcome to carry as big a chip on their shoulders as they want?

these grands are given as a result of a suggestion made by the RoC back in 2005 (after accession)
I am uncertain how the moneys is distributed. I am fairly certain that it cannon be passed through the “trnc”. So it’s either direct to the farmer ( who is registered via the RoC or direct in EU) or via the RoC.
One more RoC gesture that will soon stop after these joke negotiations are over.
Malcolm, with all the article you post, none seem to deal with the news in Turkey and the political turmoil there (new arrests yesterday). Do I detect some hesitance in touching these matters ?
Is there anyone here that thinks things will change in Turkey by 2012 (election time)? it look like ertogan is fighting the “deep state”.
There might be hope for all of us afterall(including you expats).

pauline, you could say i’m a sympathiser, but well travelled, in my own profession i’m known as the bosun from bagdad, or bagdad bob, like saddam i take no prisoners, but unlike Idi da da Amin who was the president of uganda and the self proclaimed king of scotland, he ate his prisoners. I’ve been to the north several times and really like it there, next time we come, we’re coming as illegal immigrants through larnaca. I’m not too keen on the eu but i hate the euro, like you i also live on an island ufortunatly we don’t have goats grazing here. you have heard of orkney!

Nor has anyone sent articles about Greece or the UK, the other guarantors having problems. Would you like to write an article?

Greece may have mega problems but at least they have George Papandreou, a credible Prime Minister who was not responsible for their problems in any way, genuinely facing up to the problems and taking positive action to sort them out.
Look what the UK has in Brown, the man who caused many of our problems, working with discredited shady cronies digging even a bigger hole.
At the moment most people, who still have jobs, are better off than they were before recession, given almost for free mortgage repayments but what happens when reality hits?
I wonder if the Greeks would like to swap Papandreou for Brown, Cameron, and Clegg?

well i would very surprised if brown got in again, a lot of people don’t like him, for the simple reason he wasn’t voted in by the voters, but side stepped into the job, and a lot of people never forgave blair for that. Being in the euro zone countries have to meet certain targets set down by brussels, fortunately in britain the government runs it own fiscal policies and not russels, we set our interest rates, our vat rate is lower than the euro zone, despite brussels telling us we have to bring it in line with eu countries. When ireland voted down the lisbon treaty brussels got a mighty shock, and so did the irish government at the time, i wonder what wheeling and dealing the irish government did to get the people to vote in favour of it, no doubt extra concessions of some sort, and the irish do very well from the commons agriculture policy. when more people are voting for contestants in the x factor than the general election, doesn’t that tell you something.

Hi Robert
I know where Orkney is from my school geography lessons but I have never been there, it does conjure up scenes of a more leisurely
pace of life. I hope the reality lives up to my imagination. It sounds as if you live an interesting busy life so somewhere to relax must be important to you. A more leisurely pace of life, I believe is what the ex pats here were looking for but unfortunately
it was not what they found – their dreams have turned into living
nightmares and they have become the target of such hatred – it is so sad.

I don’t care where you come from YS you are a racist plain and simple.
You are just a sad mean spirited bitter old man. Lighten up and let a little sunshine into your heart before it is too late mate. Can’t you see that you have become nothing a but a joke and most people just laugh at your ravings and wind you up, I don’t laugh, I think it very sad that someone at your stage of life cannot try to do something positive with what is left of it.
Your legacy is recorded on this board and your dieing words could well be, “cheapskate, scum sucking plonker”, I should consider having that inscribed on your grave because it appears to be the only contribution that you are capable of making.
