South Cyprus hit by fuel strike
President Christofias’ government has made a stand and, as part of an attempt to control the economy, has capped petrol prices. Throughout the north this is the norm where knowing fuel prices will stay steady in the future helps business stability. Fuel retailers in the south responded swiftly to show their disapproval of this move to set maximum prices by closing pumps in an indefinite strike until the government backs down. So far the government have been seen as weak and have usually backed down under pressure but with their popularity waning this may not be an option.
For the next 8 days the maximum price for 95-octane petrol is set at 95 cents per litre, 97 cents for 98-octane and 87.5 cents for diesel. News of the strike resulted in queues forming at petrol stations. Prices in the south are roughly 20% more than the north so it would not be surprising if GC motorists started making regular trips there to fill up.

exactly the government aren’t popular, poor economy and with negative growth and sky high prices , people go where the prices are the lowest and if it means crossing over from paradise to the other side they will, and appears they’ve been doing it for some time now, and it’s not only petrol they’re buying either.Probably that’s why the government are planning more crossings making it easier for people to access the north, or maybe the GOC has done a deal with TNRC. Elections are due in britain soon, but as per usual politicians regardless where they come, vote for me i will deliver, why do you think many politicians in britain are not standing at the next election, because of those who were caught with their hands in the till cheating the taxpayer, it’s a case it’s better to jump than being pushed. But in the south they persit on slagging of their government on websites, but that’s as far as it goes, did somebody mention balls i’ve got some if you want

WE do not have these problems in the TRNC, why not join others from the south and move over here. We also have sensible opening times for our shops and garages and our petrol is cheaper.

I like the colour of your politics Masta – couldnt agree more.
Kyriacos I just pay the nice man when he puts the petrol in for me, but seriously I think 20% cheaper is about right. Of course
a lot depends on the exchange rate and the lire is pretty strong
at present, about 2.06 TL to the Euro. I think the price is
about 1.75 to 1.85 depending on which fuel you buy.
Forgive me if I dont know what 98 is!!!!!

98 Octane petrol here is about 1.85TL per litre. At 2.09TL to the Euro that works out at just 0.88Euro per litre.
