Hillary Clinton officially invites President Talat to Washington
US Greeks are disturbed by the fact that Turkish Cypriot President Mehmet Ali Talat is expected to officially meet with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Washington on March 30 and they are therefore trying to prevent the meeting from going ahead. The National Coordinated Effort of Hellenes (CEH) have sent a letter to President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden “to reverse the decision.”
“Pursuing anything that suggests de facto recognition of the occupation regime would not only be contrary to countless U.N. Security Council resolutions, but it would perhaps force the Republic of Cyprus to reconsider its stance with regard to Turkey and the European Union,” the U.S. Greek leaders said. “Please overturn these misguided actions by people in your administration.”
This comes after Hillary Clinton recently called for the lifting of an international economic embargo on Turkish Cypriots. However, Vice President Biden has in the past supported Greeks and therefore may put pressure on Clinton. This is the second country to officially invite President Talat to meetings, Spain being the first to do so just over a week ago.

this is out and out interference with the trnc presidential elections !!
why didnt mrs clinton invite him earlier??
why did she wait for his candidacy to be announced??
and why if mr ban ki moons visit to the north and south was not to support talat in the election campaign is talat using massive posters of him and mr moon ???
wouldnt surprise me if there is one of taat and the spanish minister and then one with mrs clinton too !!!
unless the usa is going to put pressure on the eu to list isolations at once then all of these meetings are a farce

Whatever people’s thoughts are of Turkish military presense on the island…The Turkish Cypriots, who have lived on the island for centuries , have a right to exist and a right to recognition and representation. The ROC does not represent the views or wishes of the Turkish Cypriot people. The TRNC does.

It’s the same kind of garbage rhetoric we’ve seen from Greek and GC nationalists for 35 years. “occupation regime”!! For god’s sake, can any of those morons define exactly what is an occupation regime, as it applies to TRNC?
I have never been able to understand what it means in TRNC, as I drive around the streets of Girne, or of any of the lovely little villages, as I shop in one of the large supermarkets or any of the village shops or market places, as I sit in a restaurant or bar somewhere soaking up the happiness, peace and tranquility of the local scene. I see no signs of troops, guns, tanks, public notices warning or curfews, furtive movement and troubled glances.
All those intransigents who can do no more than repeat the same boring old drivel about occupied territory, illegal regime or unrecognised statehood are doing neither themselves nor the island any favours.
Chet is absolutely correct in what he has just said.

GR implies that Hillary Clinton’s invite “must be another one of those spoofs”
It’s no big deal, it’s happened before http://www.eurotopics.net/en/archiv/results/archiv_article/ARTICLE48791-Talat-s-visit-to-Washington-angers-Greek-Cypriots

Every now and again, I detect the sound of the rug being ever-so gently pulled from under the RoC. I hear it again.

i agree with ian edwards, for an occupied country i’ve never had any problems in the country or getting into the north from the south, it was actually harder trying to get into east berlin from west berlin, which was a military run regime, backed by the ruskies. On top of inviting talat she’s also made calls for the embargo to be lifted, all this publicity the north is recieving is bound to upset the neighbours,If the US greeks are upset by this why don’t leave the us and move to roc and support their cousins. I wonder who will be next to invite talat, “gordon brown” the “queen”.
Hot debate. What do you think?

I think all should address Ms Clinton and petition her not to submit to any pressure to cancel the invitation. you can email her at http://contact-us.state.gov/cgi-bin/state.

Mr Talat is the most moderate of all T/C leaders that there have been.
Winning the forthcoming elections and keeping the lid on the extremist elements is far more conducive to the on going talks .

Would that be the same Mr. Talat who blames the greedy builders
for the floods because they built/dumped in the ravines – of course
being in government he had no control over what they did, ‘the
buck stops here’ only if its a nice buck. Time for someone
who has the courage to stand up to everyone who does not have the
good of the state as their priority internally and externally.
